The human mind is a very mysterious and unrivaled creation. With the help of technology attempts are being made to unfold some of the mysteries and to see how we can modify our behavioral instincts towards things. Dr J Schwartz a neuropsychiatrist devised a very potent technique to treat the patients suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder without the use of any sort of medication. He instructed his patients to rewire their brain by changing the way the thought. What’s interesting here is that if he could treat patients with that level of rigidity, surely, we can help normal people develop a better mindset towards things merely by adopting a few simple techniques. It’s a simple four step process the use of which can definitely ensure a change in the way we think.

1. Re-label
The first step involved in the technique is to rename or re-label our thoughts, feelings or moods. It’s like directing oneself to think that the continuous urge or message being sent to us by the brain is a “false message” or a “brain glitch”. It’s pretty much synonymous with differentiating between what’s real and what’s not and tackling one’s own thoughts. For example, if a person thinks that the main door of his home is open and he didn’t close it when he got in. He has to think to himself, “no I did close the door; I’m just having an urge to go and check it.” It’s all about modifying those continuous redirections from the brain to go and perform a particular function. And modifying the main thinking center is in no way easy, tackling the brain is a tough ask indeed.

2. Reattribute
The second step is relatively simpler. One has to think what makes these thought to come back to me? Why am I having these urges all of a sudden? If a person is sane enough understand the underlying mechanism that causes those compulsive urges. One can easily reattribute those occurrences as the brain stuck in its gear, or the brain misfiring or simpler it could be brain glitch.

3. Refocus
Refocusing is the toughest step of all. Having recognized what’s wrong and where the problem is, one has to now actually change his behavior. At this step one has to replace the old behavior with a new one that is more positive compared to the previous one. This is where chemistry steps in, you are creating new channels, circuits and pathways and you are refusing to be misled by your own thoughts, you refuse to give in and you definitely become the one in control of your own mind.

This is basically synonymous with shifting the gears of your car manually. According to Schwartz it’s simply overriding the failed automatic transmission of your own car. By having simple positive alternatives to everything, achieving anything is possible and it is by true means more enjoyable and healthy. It’s a simple rule that practice makes a man perfect. The more the brain exercises the change in his thought process, the easier that transition from the stuck gear becomes and the brain function better as it does not have to think before calling up the same exercise again and again.

4. Revalue
Everything pans out quite efficiently in the fourth step. By adopting the same mindset in all aspects of our behavior we begin to notice considerable change in the way we function. Our brain starts to function more efficiently. That transition between gears automatically improves and we achieve more and better things in our lives. It’s pretty obvious that adopting a positive and more productive state of mind and action towards things, life can be made more productive and much that hasn’t yet been had can be obtained.

According to Schwartz using this approach we can achieve two very important things.
1. We become happier
2. We begin to feel more in control our thoughts and emotions and we actually gain control of them.

Using this approach in all different fields of life whether it is business, academics, jobs or sports we can surely make a difference to our lives.
