If you’re like millions of others, you’ll likely have a desire to be happier, but how exactly does one go about being happier without making major changes that seem impossible to make? Well, we’ve all heard that money cannot buy happiness, however, there are ways you can be happier with the money you already have. Instead of adding make more money to your happy wish list, consider spending the amounts of what you already have, differently.

Research shows that buying material things such as a large house or imported car does not make people as happy as having a personal experience. Turns out that buying experiences, such as a dream holiday, lavish evening out or even tickets to your favorite comedian, will bring you more pleasure than any material item.

Buy time
A vast majority of people around the world constantly claim they just don’t have enough time in a day. If you are one of these people, use your money to buy yourself time. You can easily do this by outsourcing projects, hiring gardeners, house cleaners or a babysitter — whatever it takes to free up your day (or week) and provide you with much needed one-on-one time with friends and family. People who don’t feel pressured by life’s expectations are happier so why not use your money to help buy some free time to hang out with your best friend, read a book or just take an extra long shower or candle lit bath.

Improve your self esteem
Instead of focusing on making more money, consider spending a little of what you already have on other people. Spending money on others, especially on those who truly could use a little help, makes people feel happier than if they were to spend the money on themselves. Spending money on others benefits us emotionally, allowing us to enjoy our financial gains in a different way. Research shows that giving not only makes us feel better, but also leads to higher self esteem.

Pay now, consume later
Modern technology makes it all too easy for us to consume now and pay later. The result is often a large bill when we least expect it — or can afford it! Instead of falling prey to technology, reverse this modern trend by paying now and consuming when it’s necessary. You can buy more happiness with less money when you’re not anticipating a consequence, which is a bill. To enjoy the ‘pay now consume later’ theory, consider paying upfront for a vacation you will take in six months from now. Not only is your vacation paid for, booking ahead offer discounts and gives you something to look forward to!

Use your money to take care of yourself. The most important thing you can ever have is your health. Spend your money on buying healthy food, a new pair of runners for jogging, and indulge in spa days or regular massages. You can even invest in a high quality mattress to help you sleep better. Spending your money on these types of small things are certainly better ways to invest in yourself, your health and your overall happiness!
