Goals are considered as the primary key to achievement. People who perceive life as meaningful and purposeful, set realistic goals that keep them motivated, directed and full of life.

While achieving a goal, an individual needs to be specific and focused on concentrating on one task at one time. Multi tasking and multiple goals setting are intricate to handle because an individual’s mind can easily be diverted and could lead to frustration or failure to pursue the target goal.

Measurable goals should be planned and refined because it facilitates improvement and dedication. Goals should also be attainable, realistic and relevant. They should be according to one’s own interests and desires so that it enhances one’s motivation level. If the goals are selected according to outside influences and requirements then they only produce lethargy and boredom. Each goal requires a unique set of conditions, abilities and motivation level; therefore it should be planned according to one’s own interests.

For goals setting, time organization is equally important. Setting a time limit and considering the task or a goal as a challenge leads to motivation to accomplish it. Moreover, while planning the goals it is essential to look at the goals probable outcome. This is a very effective strategy as it enables an individual to idealize the consequences of goal achievement and its impact on his life.

A study was conducted by Lock et al (1981) to investigate the relationship between goal setting and performance. His findings revealed that explicit and challenging goals lead to higher performance and productivity as compared to undemanding and easy goals or no goals at all. Thus, to proceed in any direction an individual must needs to comprehend the challenge in goals and value them. (Cummings & Worley)

Goal Mechanism explains the four ways through which goal effects performance. Firstly, goals have a directive purpose i.e. they direct an individual both cognitively and behaviorally towards a goals relevant tasks. Secondly, they serve an energetic function i.e. high valued goal enhances one’s functioning and boosts ones ability to put more effort into achieving the goal as a long time and effort and individuals can become fatigued and frustrated. However, short term goals allow an individual to work fast and hard on a short dead line.  Lastly, goals influence action i.e. they direct an individual towards arousal and achievement.

Beside other advantages goal setting also saves time, cut down stress and assists an individual to be more productive and prospers in life, thus leading to an organized life.
