Motivation along with enthusiasm and vitality determines an individual’s pace towards goal achievement. Those people who are motivated possess an innate desire to put their maximum endeavor into fulfilling the needs to accomplish the task successfully. Thus, motivation is considered as an incentive that stimulates and encourages an individual to give his best. Without it, an individual is more likely to give up and thus fails to meet his goals and come up to the expectations of others.

The theory of intrinsic motivation explains that motivation is something that resides within the individual.  It is an internal part of human personality that needs to be nurtured and endorsed. It evolves internally and is influenced by environmental factors and externally such as rewards, punishment and challenges in the environment.  External and internal factors both interact to determine the level of motivation. It is an intrinsic force that springs from within an individual and its high level permits an individual to prosper in life.

Furthermore, it depicts that if the environment is not appealing or the task is not challenging, it lowers the motivation level. Thus, with low motivation an individual feels stressed and bothered rather than enjoying the task.

Another motivational theory i.e. Instrumental theory highlights the significance of motivation and indicates that individuals tend to engage themselves in behaviors after evaluating its consequences. Thus, if an individual expects positive outcome, he will be motivated towards it and will be more likely to engage in it.

There are many strategies in positive psychology to boost the motivation level and to increase the performance rate. Understanding and organizing your goals as well as not giving up and continually reminding yourself that you can do it are important in self-motivation.
